In a major boost to regional connectivity, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Kumar Bhaskar Varma Setu on February 14, 2026, in Guwahati, Assam. This six-lane extradosed prestressed concrete (PSC) bridge spans the Brahmaputra River, connecting Guwahati with North Guwahati and marking the first such structure in Northeast India. Built at a cost of approximately ₹3,030 crore under the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, the 1.24-kilometer bridge is designed to withstand high seismic activity and flooding, incorporating advanced features like friction pendulum bearings for enhanced durability.

The bridge significantly reduces travel time between the two sides of the river from 45-60 minutes to just 7-10 minutes, easing daily commutes and facilitating smoother logistics. Named after the 12th-century poet-king Kumar Bhaskar Varma, the bridge replaces an outdated 1962 Bailey bridge and supports heavier traffic loads, promoting trade, commerce, and tourism. It also improves access to the sacred Maa Kamakhya Temple, benefiting pilgrims and local economies in the Kamrup district.

Union Minister Nitin Gadkari described the project as a "giant leap" in Northeast infrastructure, aligning with the government's vision for Viksit Bharat. The event at Lachit Ghat included the dedication of other initiatives, such as the temporary campus of IIM Guwahati, a National Data Centre, and 100 PM E-Buses, underscoring comprehensive development in Assam.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma highlighted the bridge's role in transforming Assam into a growth engine, emphasising its impact on youth opportunities and regional integration.

State-level implications are profound, with improved mobility expected to drive economic activity in Assam and neighboring states like Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh. The project addresses long-standing connectivity challenges in the seismically active region, where infrastructure has historically lagged. Experts note potential benefits including job creation in construction and allied sectors, alongside environmental considerations to minimise river disruption.

The Kumar Bhaskar Varma Setu represents a milestone in India's infrastructure push, fostering sustainable growth in the Northeast.
