IIM Nagpur Achieves Landmark: India’s Second Net Zero Solar Campus Powers Ahead on Sustainable Infrastructure

The Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Nagpur has achieved a historic sustainability milestone by becoming India’s second fully net-zero solar campus, underscoring its leadership in green infrastructure and responsible management education.

Unveiling its 2MW ground-mounted solar park spread across the 145-acre MIHAN Special Economic Zone, IIM Nagpur has redefined what an eco-friendly higher education campus can look like. The solar park, with a capacity of 1,998 kW, is projected to generate nearly 3 million units of renewable electricity annually, enough to power the entire campus and offset over 2,500 metric tons of CO₂ emissions every year - equivalent to planting 50,000 mature trees.

This ₹12 crore initiative was realized through CSR-funded partnerships between IIM Nagpur, Tata Power, and the Maharashtra State Electricity Transmission Company Limited (MahaTransco) - without direct government allocations. The collaboration reflects Maharashtra’s broader commitment to source 52% of its power from renewables by 2030 and positions the institute as a model for sustainable infrastructure in India.

During the inaugural event attended by faculty, alumni, and local dignitaries, IIM Nagpur Director Prof. Bhimaraya Metri emphasized that sustainability is no longer an institutional choice but a leadership necessity.

“Sustainability is at the core of IIM Nagpur’s philosophy and progress. By powering our entire campus through solar energy, we are not just reducing our carbon footprint — we are embedding environmental responsibility into management education,” said Prof. Metri.

His remarks highlighted the institute’s role as both an academic pioneer and social innovator, inspiring future managers to integrate environmental, social, and governance (ESG) principles into corporate and policy decisions.
